> 4G to the Danes in 2011
Radio frequencies are required for running mobile network in Denmark and consequently, the four mobile operators Telia, Telenor, TDC and 3 all signed up for the so-called 4G auction. The companies fought about acquiring licenses giving them the right to offer mobile broadband network in the 2.5 gigahertz frequency band. The band is suitable for the new 4G/LTE technology that can increase the speed on the net. TDC, Telia and Telenor acquired the three large frequency portions on 2x20 megahertz to offer mobile broadband network, while 3 acquired the small frequency portion on 2x10 megahertz. The price for one large license was about 50 times higher than for 3's small license. From the recent 4G auction the state of Denmark profited about DKK 1 billion. However, the profit is far from the amount which the telecom operators paid for the 3G licenses on a similar auction in 2001. Telia, TDC, Telenor and 3 will all make use of the 4G licenses this year.
